Carbamazepine is a widely used anticonvulsant drug. It is also prescribed for psychological disorders to stabilize mood. However, it is associated with several adverse effects such as hypersensitivity, Steven Johnson syndrome, a potentially dangerous disease and toxic epidermal necrolysis. The Carbamazepine side effect test is specially designed to detect genetic variation in human leukocyte antigen (HLA). The carriers of certain HLA alleles are at a higher risk of developing adverse effects due to Carbamazepine. The test results will help physicians to choose the appropriate drug and avoid the usage of carbamazepine in patients carrying this genetic variation.
Who needs the Test?
- Adults and children suffering from epilepsy
- People having trigeminal neuralgia
- People with psychiatric disorders such as bipolar disorders
- People in whom the specific HLA allele is present in the family
Sample requirement: The preferred sample is 3 mL of blood in EDTA tube or buccal swab or saliva
